heart attitude

Matthew 5:21-22

English Standard Version

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, "You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment." But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, "You fool!" will be liable to the hell of fire.

Have you ever got so mad you wanted to shake someone? Yes, people can make you so mad and try your patience that you don’t have, but when you read the word of God you don’t have a right to get that mad. God looks at the intent of the heart not just at what is happening. Yes, people can try you and see how much religion you have or see if it’s just religion and not God. In both verses Jesus is talking about your heart, if you kill somebody or if you call someone stupid. The attitude of the heart is the same, and it’s this attitude that makes a person morally guilty before God. We have to make sure our heart doesn’t even feel like a person is stupid, because we will stand before God for our words and our hearts.
